Johny Pitts: Home is Not a Place

Thu 11 August - Sat 24 December 2022

Graves Gallery

What is Black Britain? In 2021, Sheffield-born photographer and writer, Johny Pitts, joined by poet Roger Robinson, followed the British coast in search of an answer.

Pitts’ photographs documenting the journey explore the idea of home through the lens of the Black British experience. On display alongside images of Sheffield’s Firth Park, where he grew up, the works look beyond physical and geographical boundaries. Together, they reflect on home as rooted in the communities we’re part of and the connections we share.

Home is Not a Place has been developed through the Ampersand/Photoworks Fellowship, a new biennial research and development opportunity for mid-career artists using photography. The Fellowships is a collaboration between The Ampersand Foundation and Photoworks, kindly supported by Spectrum Photographic and Arts Council England.

The exhibition is complemented by the book, Home is Not a Place by Johny Pitts and Roger Robinson, published by Harper Collins and available in the gallery shop.

My photographic practice involves trying to celebrate the spaces, capture them while they're still here and give them a home. If not in a literal sense in a figurative sense, for me home is somewhere that you take with you.
