Plan your journey to Kelham Island Museum using the Traveline website

By road
Kelham Island Museum is located on the edge of the city centre on Alma Street, off Corporation Street (A61). You turn onto Alma Street just by the Tesco on the corner.

Alma Street is now partially closed to vehicles, with barriers outside The Fat Cat pub. You can drive round to the museum car park, but have to exit the way  you came in, back onto Corporation Street.  

Parking
Free visitor parking with 30 spaces is located on the main museum site. There is also an overflow car park located adjacent to Kelham Island Brewery and the Fat Cat pub on Alma Street (spaces M1 – 10 only).

Accessible parking is available behind the Bessemer Converter (the large black structure just next to the main entrance gates) as you arrive.

Visitor car parking is not available on major event days, including the Victorian Christmas Market.

By tram
We are just a short walk from Shalesmoor Tramstop or a ten-minute walk from Cathedral, visit www.supertram.com for timetables and prices

Walking directions from Shalesmoor tramstop:
Cross over Penistone Road dual carriageway and turn right. Turn left and walk down Cornish Street. Turn right at the bottom onto Green Lane and walk for around 5 minutes, passing The Milestone Pub on your left and The Grind Cafe on your right. Turn left just after The Fat Cat pub onto Kelham Island. Follow the road round to the left passing The Chimney House and you will arrive at Kelham Island Museum.

By rail
The nearest station is Sheffield – from there, it’s a 25 minute walk to Kelham Island or a short tram ride.

By Bus
Visit https://journeyplanner.travelsouthyorkshire.com for a journey planner and timetables. Bus links to Kelham Island are: 7, 8, 83, 83a, 95, 95a – Closest bus stop is Mowbray Street 57, 81, 82, 86 – Closest bus stop is Gibraltar Street

There are toilets available in the museum foyer. Disabled access toilets are available next to the café across from the museum entrance and on the first floor, above the café (lift available for first floor).  Baby change facilities are available in the women's toilets in the museum foyer and in the disabled access toilet on the first floor, above the café.

Unfortunately, there is no locker or cloakroom provision available for visitors at the present time.

The onsite Island Café Bar and The Millowners Arms traditional pub are both open daily and offer a range of food and drink. Enjoy the large beer garden with table service.

Browse our changing range of vintage Sheffield cutlery, as well contemporary designs as by David Mellor and Wentworth Pewter, and books exploring the city’s history.

You’ll also find lots of Sheffield souvenirs and tasty treats made in the city, including Sheffield Honey and Forge Coffee, and of course, Henderson’s Relish.

Getting Around

• There are 3 accessible parking bays for blue badge holders at the museum alongside more than 20 other public parking spaces.
• We welcome Assistance Dogs to Kelham Island Museum.
• The museum is surrounded by traditional cobbled paving, but a firm and level footpath has been installed over the cobbles from the main gate. This path conveniently links the car park to the main museum building, Brearley Room, Millowners Arms, accessible toilets and Island Café Bar.
• Little Mesters Lane (an area inside the museum) has a fully cobbled walkway.
• The Crossley Gas Engine viewing platform is accessed via a short flight of stairs.
• There are automatic doors to the main building, Millowners Arms, Stone Garden and Crucible Shop. There is level or ramped access throughout the museum. Stairs and lifts are provided to all three floors.
• Kelham Island Museum is a large building with exhibits spread over three floors. We have installed a fixed static tactile map to help visitors with visual impairments to find their way around the site. The map is located inside the main entrance near to the reception desk.
• You can also borrow a hand held tactile map free of charge from reception. This can be taken with you on your journey around the museum. Loan copies of the map are also available before your visit on request.
• Seating is available throughout the museum
• Folding chairs and wheelchairs are available on request. To book a wheelchair in advance of your visit, please email info@sheffieldmuseums.org.uk or call 0114 272 2106

Sounds & Environment

• Kelham Island Museum can be noisy in places which may impair visitors’ ability to hear clearly.
• Museum staff can help you to identify quieter areas and to advise when particularly noisy events are happening, such as the running of the River Don Engine at 12pm and 2pm.
• If you are affected by noisy environments you can also borrow ear defenders from reception.

• You’ll find captioning on our AV / films throughout the gallery
• Our brochures and flyers are available in large print on request
• An audio induction loop is provided at the admissions desk and a set of portable audio induction loops are available during visits and as part of guided tours

Accessible Toilets 

Accessible toilets are located adjacent to the café directly opposite to museum entrance.

There isn’t a Changing Places toilet nearby the museum. The nearest Changing Places Toilet is located at the Crucible Theatre
