Ruskin

The Ruskin Collection was originally formed by the influential Victorian artist, writer and critic John Ruskin to stimulate the creative imaginations of the metalworkers of Sheffield. It was first displayed in the Museum of St George at Walkley in 1875.

The collection now contains around 16000 objects including watercolours, drawings, prints, plaster casts, minerals, illustrated books, manuscripts, and coins. The collection includes works by J.M.W Turner, Albrecht Dürer, Charlotte Murray, and John James Audubon.

Themes in the collection include drawing education and drwaing from life, Natural History, and the architecture of Venice. The collection is cared for by Sheffield Museums on behalf of the charity which Ruskin set up to inspire creativity. Exhibitions chosen from the collection are displayed in the Ruskin Gallery, Millennium Gallery. .
