Archaeology

The core of Sheffield’s archaeology collection originated with the Sheffield Literary & Philosophical Society in the 1820s. After becoming a founding part of Weston Park Museum in 1875, it grew quickly.

It now contains around 500,000 items, including material culture from Ancient Egypt, Greek, Roman and other non-British societies. The majority of the collection has been excavated from Sheffield and the Peak District region. It is a unique record of human development in the area, from the Palaeolithic to the Post-Industrial modern period.

Significant collectors include Thomas Bateman, Reginald Gatty, Leslie Armstrong, Greville J Chester and William Bragge. The collection also includes, and is the official repository for, archaeological archives from contemporary excavations in the Sheffield area.
