Art

Sheffield has a rich and varied collection of over 6,000 paintings, watercolours, prints, drawings, photographs and sculpture that portray the development of British and European art from the 17th century to the present day.

The collection reflects the personal interests and tastes of its two key patrons, Sheffield businessmen John Newton Mappin (1800-1883) and John George Graves (1865-1945) who believed that Sheffield was worthy of a nationally important art collection.

The most significant grouping is the Modern British collection which includes works by many of Britain’s most significant 20th century artists including Frank Auerbach, Vanessa Bell, David Bomberg, Gwen John and Stanley Spencer.
