Claudette Johnson’s work derives from her own experience of being a black woman in Britain.

Johnson invites her sitters to 'take up space in a way that is reflective of who they are', empowering rather than objectifying the women in her art. Powerful images of black women who are overlooked or negatively portrayed, her figures command respect and exude confidence.
